Margaret
Loving God, I am thinking tonight of Margaret, a preschool teacher I knew years ago. Margaret has cognitive differences. While the other teachers engaged the kids in various creative activities, she counted. Primarily, she counted the kids. Are they all present and accounted for? Then she counted other things. Do we have a snack for everybody? Do we have enough craft supplies? Then Margaret would count the kids again, just to make sure everybody was together, safe, and included. Her counting was one of the purest forms of care I've ever witnessed. Margaret would not consider herself a political activist, but she taught children an implicit politics of human dignity and the common good. Wherever she is tonight, God bless Margaret. And bless the world with people who know that everybody counts. Amen.
